January 2019 – OGRAIN Winter Conference

Join our panel of transitioning farmers discussing approaches to successful organic transition, as well as what they wished they knew before they started.

Moderator, Michael O’Donnell, is the organic and diversified agriculture educator for Purdue Extension where he works to support grain farmers transitioning acreage into organic production.

Jon Jovaag returned to the southern MN family farm he was raised on in 2011 and has all the land now certified or in transition to organic. Jon and his wife Ruth raise corn, small grains, alfalfa and soybeans, as well as pigs, sheep and cattle.

Joel Layman farms near Berrien Center, Michigan, and began transition to organic in
2015, with 1,100 acres now certified for vegetable and grain crops.

Dan Coffman operates a conventional corn/soybean operation near Nicollet, MN. After much research, discussion with other organic producers and number crunching in fall 2018 the Coffmans started the organic transition process on two 40-acre
pieces of land.
